CAm Met my old lover in a grocery store CAm The snow was falling Christmas eve CAm I stole behind her in the frozen foods DFG And I touched her on her sleeve CAm She didn't recognize the face at first CAm But then her eye flew open wide CAm She went to hug me and she spilled her purse DFG And we laughed until we cried
Interlude: C-Am-C-Am- C-Am-D7/F#-F-G-
CAm She took her groc'ries to the check-out stand CAm The food was totaled up and bagged CAm We stood there lost in our embarrassment DFG As the conversation dragged CAm Went to have ourselves a drink or two CAm But couldn't find and open bar CAm Bought a six-pack at the liquor store DFG And we drank it in her car
Refrain: AmF We drank a toast to innocence GAm We drank a toast to now AmF We tried to reach beyond the emptiness G But neither one knew how
CAm She said she married her an architect CAm Who kept her warm and safe and dry CAm She would've liked to say she loved the man DFG But she didn't like to lie CAm I said the years had been a friend to her CAm And her eyes was still as blue CAm But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I DFG Saw a doubt of gratitude CAm She said she saw me in the record stores CAm And that I must be doing well CAm I said the audience was heavenly DF But the travelling was hell
Refrain: AmF We drank a toast to innocence GAm We drank a toast to now AmF We tried to reach beyond the emptiness G But neither one knew how AmF We drank a toast to innocence GAm We drank a toast to time AmF Reliving in our eloquence G pause Another auld lang syne
CAm The beer was empty and our tongues were tired CAm And running out of things to say CAm She gave a kiss to me as I got out DFG And I watched her drive away CAm Just for a moment I was back in school CAm And felt that old familiar pain CAm And as I turned to make my way back home FM7/G-G The snow turned into rain
