Nació en Augusta (Georgia, EE UU). Es una de las cantantes más influyentes de la llamada música cristiana y también una estrella del pop. Durante una primera etapa, su estilo se movió entre los derroteros del gospel, y de hecho, por su álbum debú Age to age (1982), recibió un Grammy como Mejor Actuación Gospel.
