Biografía:
La banda surgió cuando el guitarrista Billy Howerdel tenía la posición de técnico de guitarras en la banda Tool, durante la grabación del álbum Ænima. Howerdel le entregó unos demos al vocalista de Tool, Maynard James Keenan, quien se propuso a sí mismo como vocalista con arreglos de voz.
Se dice que el proyecto original de Billy Howerdel suponía temas muy largos, lo suficiente como para ser la banda sonora completa de una película, además de tener una voz femenina.
