O Rainer Maria foi criado em 1995 na cidade de Madison, Wisconsin, EUA. Formada por Caithlin deMarrais (vocais/baixo), Kaia Fischer (guitarra/vocais) e William Kuehn (bateria), eles gravaram um demo com 6 músicas, que foi auto-intitulado com o nome da banda. A partir daí, eles lançaram mais 5 CDs: "Past Worn Searching" (1997), "Look Now Look Again" (1999), "A Better Version of Me" (2001), "Long Knives Drawn" (que é o disco mais conhecido do grupo, com o single 'Ears Ring', que é o carro-chefe da banda - disco de 2003).
