R.E.M. fue una influyente banda estadounidense surgida en 1980 en el Estado de Georgia (EE.UU.), pionera del denominado rock alternativo e inspiración de bandas de desarrollo posterior.
En la década de los 70, plena era punk, un estudiante de arte llamado Michael Stipe conoce a un coleccionista de LP´s de los años 60 llamado Peter Buck. Ambos se unen a dos músicos experimentados, Mike Mills y Bill Berry, y comienzan a tocar en pubs locales en la ciudad de Athens.
