Melissa Lou Etheridge nació en Leavenworth Kansas el 29 de Mayo de 1961, es la segunda hija de John y Elisabeth Etheridge. Tras una infancia y adolescencia marcadas por la frialdad de su familia Melissa vuelca todo su ser en la música en la que pronto destaca tocando con grupos locales. Estudia en Leavenworth donde se gradua, se muda a Boston para estudiar música en el colegio Berkley de música, que abandona tras un semestre porque necesita tocar no teoria sobre tocar...
