"The Railway Children" se formó en Wigan en 1984 por Gary Newby (compositor / voz / guitarra), Brian Bateman (ritmo / guitarra), Guy Keegan (batería), y Stephen Hull (bajo). [1] Factory Records grabaron su Un solo debut suave sonido en 1986, seguido de su álbum debut Reunion Wilderness, en 1987, tanto en número uno en comunicados independientes del Reino Unido, junto con su segundo single, "Brighter" [1]. Salieron de la fábrica poco después y se firmaron con Virgin Records [1].
