Rodney J. Crowell (born August 7, 1950) is a American country music singer/songwriter who is considered to be part of both the alternative country and the mainstream country music camps. For three years he was part of Emmylou Harris' "Hot Band"; later he gained mainstream popularity as a solo performer with a series of critcally-claimed albums released during the late 1980s and early 1990s.
Crowell was born in Houston, Texas to James Walter Crowell and Addie Cauzette Willoughby.

D#G#D#G# I’m stretched out like a canvas ‘neath a blue and endless sky D#CmBb Staring up through cattle bones as cotton balls roll by D#G#D#G# I swear I see a rose up there so beautiful and white D#CmBb If I so much as blink an eye I could lose her in this light
G#Bb Out here in this deserted land the future looks so vast G#Bb Like every little grain of sand and every blade of grass
D#G#D# I’m alone but not alone CmG#D# Something inside me is trying to guide me on my long way back home D#G#D# I’m alone but not alone
Only with these stolen words can I unpack my heart While you rise from the ashes I feel free in the dark I swear I feel your humid breath so soft inside my ear The day they lay my soul to rest I swear I’ll meet you there
Out here on this great expanse the wind cries over my head At night I hear the natives dance in circles round my bed
I’m alone but not alone Something quite near me is trying to steer me It’s a long way back home
D#G#D# I’m alone but not alone G#BbG#Bb Goodbye California, Goodbye Tennessee, G#BbG#Bb Goodbye sweet Carolina, don’t worry about me
I’m alone but not alone Something so strong is leading me on my long way back home I’m alone but not alone
