Robert Francis começou a ter aulas de piano antes que seus dedos pudessem alcançar os pedais. Quando ele tinha sete anos, sua mãe o incentivou a aprender a tocar violão para que ele pudesse tocar as músicas da tradicional ranchera que ela cresceu cantando com suas irmãs. Dois anos depois, Ry Cooder lhe deu seuprimeiro violão, um de aço vintage nacional. Na adolescência John Frusciante do Red Hot Chili Peppers o aceitou como seu aluno e só alguns anos mais tarde, ele lançou seu primeiro álbum One by One - com 19 anos.
