El grupo fue fundado en Hull en 1984 por Heaton que volvía de un largo viaje por Europa. El primero en atender su propuesta fue Cullimore. A continuación se unen a ellos Whitaker y Ted Key que estaban en un grupo llamado Gargoyles. Emipieza un período de giras que hace que las discográficas se fijen en el cuarteto. Acaban firmando contrato con Gol Records y son promocionados con el eslogan "Cuarto mejor grupo de Hull".
El primer single, "Flag day", sale en octubre de 1985, pero no entra en listas.
