En 1961 los hermanos Brian, Carl y Dennis Wilson junto a Mike Love y Al Jardine forman The Beach Boys. La banda desarrolló un pop melódico que reune los elementos de una estética surfista californiana, desarrollando un sonido basado en armonías vocales en las que participan todos los integrantes. A partir de "God Only Knows" (Pet Sounds, 1966) la banda incluye arreglos con instrumentos que hasta entonces no figuraban en la escena popular, como el corno francés.
