La historia de Supertramp se inicia en 1969. El teclista Rick Davies (nacido en Gran Bretaña en 1944) se hallaba tocando con el grupo Joint, y estaba arruinado, cuando la suerte llamó a su puerta en forma de un apasionado del rock, que reconoció en él las dotes de una estrella de rock y se ofreció para financiar su carrera. Davies regresó a Londres para probar nuevos músicos y crear un grupo llamado provisionalmente Daddy. Uno de los elegidos fue el poliinstrumentista Roger Hodgson (nacido en 1950).
