Stereophonics son un grupo de Cwmaman, Gales formado en 1992 y llamada en sus comienzos Tragic Love Company, inspirándose en los nombres de sus grupos favoritos Tragically Hip, Mother Love Bone y Bad Company. Comenzaron como banda juvenil y más tarde, inspirados en un gramófono de la abuela de Stuart, cambiaron su nombre al actual. Proceden de Cwmaman, en el sur de Gales. Tras cambiar su nombre fueron una de las primeras bandas en firmar por la discográfica de Richard Branson V2 en Agosto de 1996.
