Los inicios de Train tuvieron lugar hace casi siete años cuando Monahan conoció a Rob Hotchkiss, el anterior cantante de Apostles, cuando ambos vivían en Los Ángeles. Los dos se trasladaron a San Francisco y empezaron a actuar en un café con escenario. Al poco Pat y Rob redondearon su sonido acústico con la incorporación de Jimmy Stafford (guitarra principal) y Charlie Colin (bajo), anteriores compañeros de Hotchkiss en los Apostles y poco después Scott Underwood se unió a la formación como batería.
