El grupo fue fundado a finales de 1969 en Dublín (Irlanda), por el bajista y cantante Phil Lynott, el guitarrista Eric Bell, el organista Eric Wrixon y el baterista Brian Downey. Wrixon se fue en 1970, y cansados de las pocas posibilidades de éxito en Dublín, el grupo se fue a Londres en 1971.
Firmando un contrato con Decca Records, el primer éxito de Thin Lizzy llegó en 1973, con "Whiskey in the Jar", una versión de una tradicional canción irlandesa.
