El cantante, Jimmy Witherspoon, aprendió su oficio en el coro de la iglesia Baptista de su ciudad natal y de adolescente quedo ensimismado con el canto de dos grandes blues singer, el orondo, Jimmy Rushing, y Big Joe Turner. Trabajó de friegaplatos en un local donde ofrecían conciertos en directo y así conoció a los grandes del blues californianos como el guitarrista y cantante, T. Bone Walker.
