This is an old blues tune for the 1920's, composed by Frank Stokes, and recorded
by The Beale Street Sheiks, which were Frank Stokes and Dan Sane.
Really worth checking out.
The Hokum High Rollers play a fantastic version of this old tune, also worth
checking out, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_sSjmJ75NAU
even if it's just for the lush foliage that may have contributed to their name.
CHICKEN YOU CAN ROOST BEHIND THE MOON
INTRO: G C G G D G G C G G D G
G G C G
Now it's chicken, Oh, Chicken, You may go up in a balloon
G G D D
Chicken, You can hide behind the moon
G G C G
Chicken, I never let a fowl be
G G G D G
Ten thousand dollar reward for the fowl on earth, You don't roost too high for me
G G C G
I got to thinkin' 'bout chicken late last night, Oh, Man I couldn't hardly rest
G G
Jumped up outta bed, Grabbed up my old shoes
D D
Thought of where some chicken was at
G G C G
Grabbed my coat, Stuck it under my arm, That's somethin' I never let fall
G G G D D G
I don't think I robbed your henhouse, 'Till I get your rooster, Poor chicken n'all
G G C G
Now it's chicken, Oh, Chicken, You may go up in a balloon
G G D D
Chicken, You can hide behind the moon, Doggone it now
G G C G
Chicken, I never let a fowl be
G G G D G
Ten thousand dollar reward for the fowl on earth, You don't roost too high for me
G G
That chicken made me awful mad the other night, Man
C G
An' that's somethin' I didn't like to take
G G
Grabbed up my little haversack, And down across my back
D D
Grabbed the chicken right by the neck
G G C G
Then I turned around, Quick as I could, A chicken hauled away I 'clare
G G D G
I won't steal meat an' bread from a cooks pot, I steal a chicken from anywhere
G G C G
Now it's chicken, Oh, Chicken, You may go up in a balloon
G G D D
Chicken, You can hide behind the moon, Doggone it now
G G C G
Chicken, I never let a fowl be
G G G D G
Ten thousand dollar reward for the fowl on earth, You don't roost too high for me
G G C G
Ah, That police 'rest me last Friday night, You wouldn't think of what it's about
G G D D
Walkin' down the alley where I lived at, A lot of chicken tied in my house
G G C G
You may carry me to the pen'tentary wall, Gonna serve out my time
G G G D G
But just as quick as you put me on the L&R track, I got chickens on my mind
G G C G
Now it's chicken, Oh, Chicken, You may go up in a balloon
G G D D
Chicken, You can hide behind the moon, Doggone it now
G G C G
Chicken, I never let a fowl be
G G G D G
Ten thousand dollar reward for the fowl on earth, You don't roost too high for me
D G
