El trío británico de folk urbano popular Hefner comienza a caminar en 1992, cuándo el cantante y guitarrista Darren Hayman se reúne con baterista Anthony Harding mientras estudiaban en la escuela de arte de Kent.
Trasladándose a Londres dos años después, el dúo aumenta a trío con la unión del bajista John Morrison, grabando su disco debut en 1996, "Another Better Friend". El disco es muy bien acogido en los círculos underground y a finales de 1997 Hefner firma con el legendario sello Too Pure.
