Dinosaur Jr es una banda de rock de Amherst, Massachusetts formada en 1983 por J Mascis (guitarra y vocales) y su compañero de secundaria Lou Barlow (bajo), luego de la separación de la banda de hardcore-punk que integraban anteriormente, Deep Wound. Posteriormente se les uniría Emmett Patrick Murphy (batería).
La banda tuvo que cambiar su nombre de Dinosaur a Dinosaur Jr luego del lanzamiento de su primer disco Dinosaur en 1985, luego de que una banda llamada Dinosaurs
