Músico imprescindible del underground estadounidense (probablemente sólo exista otro que pueda codearse con él, Jim O'Rourke): cofundador y guitarra de Slint (precursores absolutos del prefijo post-), colaborador estrecho del tótem de la canción Will Oldham en casi todos sus alias, bajista con Royal Trux, batería en King Kong, guitarra a tiempo completo de Zwan -mientras duró el "súpergrupo" de Billy Corgan, "El único músico con el que he trabajado al que no quiero volver a ver"- y ocasional en Matmos y Stereolab
