Biografía:
Nacido en Glasgow en 1952 de un padre arquitecto. David creció en Newcastle, Inglaterra. Fué fundador junto a su hermano Mark Knopfler de los Dire Straits. David toco la guitarra rítmica en los 2 primeros discos de Dire Straits, grupo que abandonó a los inicios de la grabación de Making Movies debido al protagonismo de Mark en el mismo.
Después de abandonar la formación de Dire Straits, lanzó su primer álbum en 1983 con el titulo Release (en el que también colaboró su hermano Mark, y otros miembros de la banda).
