McTell nació en 1898 (o 1901 según algunas fuentes) en el sur de Thomson, Georgia. Tras la separación de sus padres siendo todavía un niño, se asentó con su madre en Statesboro. Fue a diferentes escuelas para ciegos donde aprendió a leer braile e incluso recibió formación musical.
