[Intro] G
[Verse 1]
D Seems like only yesterday Em I left my mind behind D Down in the Gypsy Cafe Em With a friend of a friend of mine DAm She sat with a baby heavy on her knee DAm Yet spoke of life most free from slavery DAm With eyes that showed no trace of misery DAm A phrase in connection first with she CD I heard D7G That love is just a four-letter word
[Verse 2]
D Outside a rambling store-front window Em Cats meowed to the break of day D Me, I kept my mouth shut, too Em To you I had no words to say DAm My experience was limited and underfed DAm You were talking while I hid DAm To the one who was the father of your kid DAmCD You probably didn't think I did, but I heard G You say that love is just a four-letter word
[Verse 3]
D I said goodbye unnoticed Em Pushed towards things in my own games D Drifting in and out of lifetimes Em Unmentionable by name DAm Searching for my double, looking for DAm Complete evaporation to the core DAm Though I tried and failed at finding any door DAm I must have thought that there was nothing more CDG Absurd than that love is just a four-letter word
[Verse 4]
D Though I never knew just what you meant Em When you were speaking to your man D I can only think in terms of me Em And now I understand DAm After waking enough times to think I see DAm The Holy Kiss that's supposed to last eternity DAm Blow up in smoke, its destiny DAm Falls on strangers, travels free DAm Yes, I know now, traps are only set by me DAm And I do not really need to be CDG Assured that love is just a four-letter word
[Verse 5]
D Strange it is to be beside you Em Many years and tables turned D You'd probably not believe me Em If I told you all I've learned DAm And it is very, very weird indeed DAm To hear words like forever please DAm Those ships run through my mind, I cannot cheat DAm It's like looking in the teacher's face complete DAmCD I can say nothing to you but repeat what I heard G That love is just a four-letter word
