La versión original de The Vines se encontraba en los suburbios de Sydney, a mediados de los 1990s, donde Craig Nicholls, Patrick Matthews y David Oliffe se encontraron mientras estaban trabajando en un local de McDonald's. Decidieron formar una banda con Nicholls en guitarra y canto, Matthews en el Bajo y canto y Olliffe para la Batería. El grupo tocaba covers de Nirvana en eventos locales, cuando desarrollaron su propio sonido a partir del cuarto tema que Nicholls grabó.
