The hues Corporation surgiu em Los Angeles, formado por Hubert Ann Kely, Fleming Williams e Bernard Henderson. O grupo teve alguns sucessos no meio da década de 70, mas o grande e imortal hit foi "Rock the boat", no início de 1974, que fazia parte do albúm ! Freedom for the Estalion" lançado no final de 1973. Alguns críticos consideram o surgimento da disco music deve muito ao sucesso de "Rock the boat". Não demorou e flaming Williams foi substituido por Tom Brown, que acabou sendo substituido por Karl Russel no ano seguinte.
