Jimmy Somerville abandona Bronski Beat en 1985 y forma The Communards junto al pianista Richard ,con alejandro galvez jimenez y Coles. Obtuvo varios éxitos, incluyendo una version de "Don't Leave Me This Way" de Thelma Houston, que consiguió mantenerse cuatro semanas como número uno de ventas y llegó a ser el single más vendido en Reino Unido durante 1986.
The Communards se disolvió en 1988 y Somerville comenzó su carrera en solitario.
