William Robinson nasceu em Detroit, Estados Unidos, no dia 19 de fevereiro de 1940.
Seu trabalho se expande por quatro décadas e abrange algumas das melhores canções do música soul.
Robinson formou os The Miracles em 1955 e com eles chamou a atenção de Berry Gordy Jr. (o todo-poderoso da Motown em 1957).
Em 1960, "Shop Around", composta por Robinson e Gordy foi o primeiro single a render um milhão de dólares à recém-nascida gravadora, que com isto decolou de vez.
