Roy Orbison nació el 23 de abril de 1936 en Vernon, Texas. Comenzó su carrera musical a finales de los años 50, tras fichar en 1956 por la discográfica Sun Records, con la que grabó su primer sencillo, "Ooby Dooby", un tema rockabilly con el que obtuvo unos discretos resultados.
Aunque Roy Orbison comenzó como cantante country, pronto pasó al rockabilly. A pesar de ello, el estilo con el que brilló con luz propia fue el de las baladas. Su primer éxito como cantante de baladas fue el tema “Only The Lonely”, grabado en 1960.
