Nacido el 16 de septiembre de 1963 en Winnetka, en el estado de Illinois,USA.
Hijo único de Ruth y Dick Marx, se trasladó a Los Ángeles para trabajar con Lionel Ritchie, que sería quien le diera una primera oportunidad. Su primer disco, "Richard Marx", se editó en Junio de 1987. Con él obtuvo un número uno con el tema "Should´ve known better". En su segundo trabajo, "Repeat Offender", grabó el que posiblemente sea su tema más conocido, "Right here waiting".
