Steven Patrick Morrissey nació el 22 de mayo de 1959 en Davyhulme, Manchester, Inglaterra. Desde muy temprana edad se sintió atraído por la escritura, dándole prioridad a la poesía. Sus principales influencias van desde Oscar Wilde a Goethe, además de ser fanático de la música pop y el cine.
En 1980, Morrissey conoce al guitarrista Johnny Marr, quien lo invitó a colaborar con él. Luego incluyeron a otros compañeros de Marr, el bajista Andy Rourke y el baterista Mike Joyce
