Leo (Gerry) Sayer nació el 21 de mayo de 1948 en Shoreham-by-Sea, una localidad británica ubicada en Sussex.
Después de hacer sus primeros pinitos en el coro parroquial, acudir durante un tiempo a una escuela de arte y diseño, y tras intentarlo en los años 60 con la Terraplane Blues Band Sayer, Sayer se acomodó en la siguiente década al soft-rock, interpretando música comercial, domesticada, de cierta artesanía compositiva, poco memorable, que le llevó a conseguir el éxito.
