Sunny Goodge Street Donovan (as covered by Judy Collins on her "In My Life" alblum)
Donovan's version of this song doesn't really have a guitar in it, it's basically a jazz backup led by a cello. Judy Collins' version doesn't have a guitar either, but the piano accompanyment can be approximated on guitar.
It's interesting how Donovan's version is dark, moody and depressing, while Collins' is bright and upbeat. I like both.
Judy Collins version Chords (no capo) EADGBe ++++++ C x32010 C/B x20010 Am x02210 Am/G 302210 (I use my little finger for the G) F 133211 (I play as a full barre, and then F/E 033211 lift the tip of my index finger for the E) G 320003 Dm x00231
You can either flatpick or fingerpick the chords. The idea is to follow the bass run from measure to measure. Here is how I fingerpick the opening/ending run of the song to give the same feel as the piano:
CC/BAmAm/G On the firefly platform on sunny Goodge Street FF/EAmAm/G Violent hash-smoker shook a chocolate machine FF/EAmGDmG Involved in an eating scene.
CC/BAmAm/G Smashing into neon lights in their stillness FF/EAmAm/G Smearing their eyes on the crazy Kali goddess FF/ECC/BAmAm/G Listenin' to sounds of Mingus mellow fantastic.
FF/EAmAm/G "My, my", they sigh, FF/EAmGDmG "My, my", they sigh.
