Jonathan Richman, nacido en 1951 en Boston (EE.UU.), conocido por su personalidad excéntrica, infantil y encantadora, formó en 1970 The Modern Lovers, un grupo de sonido garage. La banda se separó en 1973 para renacer después solo como grupo acústico. Tuvieron un gran éxito en Europa, "Egyptian Reggae", sacado de su segundo álbum. En 1979 Richman decidió iniciar su carrera en solitario e hizo una serie de discos que varían del country al garage pasando por ritmos latinos, siempre seguido por una audiencia fiel.
