James Vernon Taylor nació el 12 de marzo de 1948 y es un cantautor y guitarrista. Nació en Belmont, Massachusetts.
La carrera de Taylor comenzó a mediados de los años 60, pero encontró su público a inicios de los 70 cantando canciones acústicas suaves y sensibles. Taylor fue parte de una ola de cantautores suaves de ese tiempo, donde podemos incluir a Carole King, Joni Mitchell, John Denver, Jackson Browne entre otros. También podemos encontrar a Carly Simon dentro de esta ola, con quien se casó más tarde.
