En el conocido sello Stiff Ian Dury y los Blockheads grabaron una serie de discos muy aprovechables dentro de la escena new wave. El inglés Dury nació el 12 de mayo de 1942 en la localidad de Upminster, Essex.
En su niñez sufrió la polio, hecho que condicionaría su físico. Después de terminar en el instituto, estudió arte y mientras daba clases de pintura decidió que dejaba el pincel, por lo menos profesionalmente, para intentar buscarse un hueco en la música.
