A principios del año 1969 Steve Marriott dejó Small Faces y se unió al joven Peter Frampton (líder de The Herd) para fundar Humble Pie, considerado uno de los primeros "supergrupos" por ser unión de dos astros del rock. Junto a Greg Ridley (bajo) y Jerry Shirley (batería) desarrollarían un estilo blues-rock basado en en el blues y el soul americano. Sus grabaciones y conciertos hasta el año 1975 fueron decisivas para la evolución del posterior hard rock y heavy metal.
