Donald McLean III (born October 2, 1945) is an American singer-songwriter, best known for his 1971 hit song "American Pie", an 8.5-minute folk rock "cultural touchstone" about the loss of innocence of the early rock and roll generation (US #1 for four weeks in 1972 and UK #2).
McLean's grandfather and father, both also named Donald McLean, had roots originating in Scotland. The Buccis, the family of McLean's mother, Elizabeth, came from Abruzzo in central Italy.

[Verse] GGsus4 Starry, starry night Am Paint your palette blue and gray C Look out on a summer's day DG With eyes that know the darkness in my soul G Shadows on the hills Am Sketch the trees and the daffodils C Catch the breeze and the winter chills DD In colors on the snowy linen land
[Chorus] Am Now I understand D7GDE What you tried to say to me Am7 And how you suffered for your sanity DEm And how you tried to set them free A7 They would not listen, they did not know how Am7DG Perhaps they'll listen now
[Verse] GGsus4 Starry, starry night Am Flaming flowers that brightly blaze C Swirling clouds in violet haze DG Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue GGsus4 Colors changing hue Am Morning fields of amber grain C Weathered faces lined in pain DG Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand
[Chorus] AmD7 Now I understand GDEm What you tried to say to me E7 And how you suffered for your sanity DEm And how you tried to set them free A7 They would not listen, they did not know how Am7DG Perhaps they'll listen now
[Bridge] AmD7 For they could not love you GDEm But still your love was true Am7 And when no hope was left in sight Cm On that starry, starry night GBm7b5E7 You took your life, as lovers often do Am But I could've told you Vincent C This world was never meant for DG One as beautiful as you
[Verse] GGsus4 Starry, starry night Am Portraits hung in empty halls C Frame-less heads on nameless walls DG With eyes that watch the world and can't forget GGsus4 Like the strangers that you've met Am The ragged men in ragged clothes C The silver thorn of bloody rose DG Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow
[Chorus]
Am Now I think I know GDEm What you tried to say to me Am And how you suffered for your sanity AEm And how you tried to set them free A7 They would not listen, they're not listening still
Am7DG Perhaps they never will
