Dire Straits were a British rock band from Newcastle, United Kingdom, formed in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (guitar and vocals), his brother David Knopfler (guitar), John Illsley (bass), and Pick Withers (drums), and subsequently managed by Ed Bicknell. The band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
Dire Straits emerged during the post-punk era of the late '70s, and while their sound was minimalistic and stripped down, they owed little to punk.

[Verse] D High and dry in the long hot day, D lost and lonely in every way Am Got the flats all around me, sky up above, D yes, I need a little water of love
D I've been too long lonely and my heart feels pain, D crying out for some soothing rain Am I believe I've taken enough, D yes I need a little water of love
[Chorus] Am Water of love deep in the ground, GD but there ain’t no water here to be found Am Some day baby when the river runs free, GD It's gonna carry that water of love to me
[Solo] DCGAmC
[Verse] CD There's a bird up in a tree, D sitting up high, just a-waitin' for me to die AmCAm If I don't get some water soon, D I'll be dead and gone in the afternoon
[Chorus] Am Water of love deep in the ground, GD but there ain’t no water here to be found Am Some day baby when the river runs free, GD It's gonna carry that water of love to me
[Solo] DCGAmC
[Verse] D Once I had a woman I could call my own, D Once I had a woman, now my woman she gone Am Once there was a river, now there's a stone D You know it's evil when you're living alone
[Chorus] Am Water of love deep in the ground, GD but there ain’t no water here to be found Am Some day baby when the river runs free, GD It's gonna carry that water of love to me
