CAmG Met my old lover in a grocery store CAmG The snow was falling Christmas eve CAm I stole behind her in the frozen foods D7/F#FM7G And I touched her on her sleeve CAmG She didn't recognize the face at first CAmG But then her eye flew open wide CAm She went to hug me and she spilled her purse D7FM7G And we laughed until we cried.
Interlude: (Do intro chords)
CAmG She took her groc'ries to the check-out stand CAmG The food was totaled up and bagged CAm We stood there lost in our embarrassment D7FM7G As the conversation dragged CAmG Went to have ourselves a drink or two CAmG But couldn't find and open bar CAm Bought a six-pack at the liquor store D7FM7G And we drank it in her car.
Refrain: AmF We drank a toast to innocence GAm We drank a toast to now AmF We tried to reach beyond the emptiness GAmG But neither one knew how.
(2nd Verse Chords) She said she married her an architect Who kept her warm and safe and dry She would've liked to say she loved the man But she didn't like to lie. I said the years had been a friend to her And her eyes was still as blue But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I Saw a doubt of gratitude. CAmG She said she saw me in the record stores CAmG And that I must be doing well CAm I said the audience was heavenly D7FG But the travelling was hell.
Refrain: AmF We drank a toast to innocence GAm We drank a toast to now AmF We tried to reach beyond the emptiness G But neither one knew how. AmF We drank a toast to innocence, GAm We drank a toast to time. AmF Reliving in our eloquence G pause Another "auld lang syne."
(2nd Verse Chords) The beer was empty and our tongues were tired And running out of things to say She gave a kiss to me as I got out And I watched her drive away Just for a moment I was back in school And felt that old familiar pain And as I turned to make my way back home FM7/G-G The snow turned into rain.
