Alela Diane Menig (born April 20, 1983, Nevada City, California, USA) is an American singer and songwriter. She grew up singing with her musician parents and performing in the school choir. She taught herself guitar, and began writing songs which blend tense, trance-like arpeggios with warm vocals and meditative lyrics about family and nature. Her first recordings were self-released in 2003 as Forest Parade. Her first solo public appearances were at the invitation of fellow Nevada City native Joanna Newsom.

DmAmG The tops of crags and cliffs, the air is thin DmAmG So we'll find a mountain path on down the hill DmAmG Meet me where the snow mount flows DmAmG It is there, my dear, where we will begin again DmAmGDmAmG Skipping stones, braiding hair DmAmGDmAmG Last year's antlers mark the trail
[Chorus] x2
DmAm Take us back, oh, take us back GDmAmG Oh, take us, take us back
DmGAm x4 Oooooh...
[Verse]
DmAmG I've a friend who lives out by the rivers mouth DmAmG He knows the fiddles cry is an old sound DmAmG A lonesome creeks and moans of empty houses DmAmG Are songs of like fallen rain DmAmGDmAmG Windblown buildings, muddy ground DmAmGDmAmG The strength of water can sink a man
[Chorus] x2
DmAm Take us back, oh, take us back GDmAmG Oh, take us, take us back
DmGAm x4 Oooooh....
[Verse]
DmAmG When the higher hills have turned blue DmAmG And the waves are lapping where the children grew DmAmG All that we have know will be an echo DmAmG Of days when love was true DmAmGDmAmG Muted voices just beyond DmAmGDmAmG The silent surface of what has gone
