Billy Bragg (Stephen William Bragg, Barking, Essex, England, 20 December, 1957) is an English singer, songwriter and left-wing activist. His music blends elements of folk music, punk rock and protest songs, and his lyrics mostly deal with political or romantic themes.
In 1977, Bragg formed the punk rock/pub rock band Riff Raff, and toured London's pubs and clubs. The band released a series of singles, which did not receive wide exposure. He also worked in Guy Norris Records in Barking.

GCG Up in the morning and out to school EmDG Mother says there'll be no work next year GCG Qualifications once the golden rule EmDG are now just pieces of paper
GCG Just because you are better than me EmDG doesn't mean that I'm lazy GCG Just because you are going forwards EmDG doesn't mean I'm going backwards
If you look the part you'll get the job in last year's trousers and your old school shoes The truth is son it's a buyer's market they can't afford to pick and choose
Just because you're better than me doesn't mean that I'm lazy Just because I dress like this doesn't mean I'm a communist
The factories are closing and the army's full I don't know what I'm going to do But I've come to see that in the land of the free there's only a future for the chosen few
Just because you're better than me doesn't mean that I'm lazy Just because you are going forwards doesn't mean I'm going backwards
At twenty-one you're on top of the scrap heap at sixteen you were top of the class All they taught you in school was how to be a good worker the system has failed you don't fail yourself
Just because you are better than me doesn't mean that I'm lazy Just because you're going forwards doesn't mean I'm going backwards
