R.E.M. was an American rock band from Athens, Georgia, formed in 1980 by drummer Bill Berry, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist/backing vocalist Mike Mills, and lead vocalist Michael Stipe. One of the first alternative rock bands, R.E.M. was noted for Buck's ringing, arpeggiated guitar style, Stipe's distinctive vocal quality and obscure lyrics, Mills's melodic basslines and backing vocals, and Berry's tight, economical style of drumming.
R.E.M. released its first single—"Radio Free Europe"—in 1981 on the independent record label Hib-Tone.

C#mB Looked into an angel's smile, A captivated all the while. C#mA From the hair and clothes she wore, C#mA I'd place her in between the wars.
EB Was she willing when she sat AD and posed the pretty photograph? EB Save her flowering and fair, AD the days to come, the days to share. EBDDsus2 A big smile for the camera, AD how did she know? EBDDsus2 the moment could be lost forever AC#m forever more
C#mB I found this photograph, A stashed between the old joist walls, C#mA in a place where time is lost, C#mA lost behind, where all things fall.
C#mB Broken books and calendars, A letters script in careful hand, C#mA music too, a standard tune by C#mA some forgotten big brass band.
EB From the threshhold what's to see A of our brave new century? EB The television's just a dream, A the radio, the silver screen. EBDDsus2 A big smile for the camera, AD how did she know? EBDDsus2 the moment could be lost forever AC#m forever more

EBDDsus2AD (repeats) last repeat replace last D with C#m
EB Was her childhood filled with rhymes, AD stolen hooks, impassioned crimes? EB Was she innocent or blind AD to the cruelty of her time? EB Was she fearful in her day, AD was she hopeful, did she pray? EB Were there skeletons inside, AD family secrets, sworn to hide? EB Did she feel the heat that stirs, AD the fall from grace of wayward girls? EB Was she tempted to pretend, AD the love and laughter, 'til the end?
