The Jayhawks ha sido uno de los más genuinos grupos del estilo musical llamado Americana. La banda es originaria de Minesota y se hace popular en 1985. Entonces agrupaba a Marc Olson a la guitarra acústica y voces, Gary Louris a la guitarra eléctrica y voces, Marc Perlman al bajo y Thad Spencer a la batería. Ken Callahan sustituiría a Thad hasta 1993. En el 92, agotador año de conciertos, se les une Karen Grotberg para ocuparse de los teclados.
