Miracle Legion was a Connecticut-based jangle pop band begun in 1984, consisting of singer Mark Mulcahy, guitarist Mr. Ray Neal, drummer Jeff Wiederschall, and bassist Steven West. Constant comparisons to R.E.M. were largely inaccurate due to the fact that, other than a few similarly sounding songs, the respective bands' sounds were largely dissimilar lyrically and musically. Their first released EP, The Backyard, was released by Incas Records in 1984 and became a college radio hit.

(Will I tell you how it is? Well, I'll tell you how it Is) A If she could cry E I'm sure she would BAE The way you treated her I never understood A If she could cry E I'm sure she would BAE The way you treated her I never understood if she could
AE She never noticed the ways thing change B From a rock to a hard place E She stayed the same A Through all four seasons E She won't complain B She had good reason AE And even more shame
A If she could cry E I'm sure she would BAE The way you treated her I never understood A If she could cry E I'm sure she would BAE The way you treated her I never understood if she could
A The bad times came slowly E One plank at a time B Now you're free to be lonely E And she's free to cry A The flames are fading E But you don't care B She don't mean nothing AE She's not even there
A If she could cry E I'm sure she would BAE The way you treated her I never understood A If she could cry E I'm sure she would BAE The way you treated her I never understood if she could
(Arpeggiate the following stanza on first 4 strings, ascending.) AE I see her there standing tall BE Waiting and waiting and waiting A She knows you'll never call E You taken her for granted that's what you done BAE So come home. Come home.
A And if she could cry E I'm sure she would BAE The way you treated her I never understood A If she could cry E I'm sure she would BAE The way you treated her I never understood if she could
B If she could cry E If she could cry B If she could cry AEE I never understood if she could
