The Statler Brothers

Maple Street Memories

by The Statler Brothers
The Statler Brothers

Biography:

The Statler Brothers were an American country music vocal group founded in 1955 in Staunton, Virginia.

Originally performing gospel music at local churches, the group billed themselves as The Four Star Quartet, and later The Kingsmen. In 1963, when the song "Louie, Louie" by the garage rock band also called The Kingsmen became famous, the group elected to bill themselves as The Statler Brothers. Despite the name, only two members of the group (Don and Harold Reid) are actual brothers and none have the surname of "Statler".

Album - Maple Street Memories - #9 on BB Hot
200 Country in 1987.

INTRO: D

#1.
D D7
We were both nine years old when you came to town
G D
I remember the big Allied Van.
D E7
My momma went over and took you all lunch, my dad
A7
gave your dad a hand.

#2.
D
And the first time I saw you was through the screen
D7 G D
door, when the paper I threw missed the porch.
G D
Lord, it's been years since I carried the news, but
A7 D
I still carry the torch.

CHORUS:
D D7
Maple Street memories and cherry tree games,
G D
summer nights and ice cream cones.
D D7
Take the red from the roses, the sun from the sky,
A7 G
but leave my Maple Street memories alone.
D A7 D
Leave my Maple Street memories alone.

D D7
We played hide-n-seek in the buildings out back
G D
I was easy to find I admit.
D
As the years flew away it got harder to hide
E7 A7
The fact I thought you were it.

#3.
D D7
Then we stood by the Lilac bush in your yard
G D
Your pink prom gown late in May
G D
Your mom took our pictures, I took your hand
A7 D
and you took my breath away.

CHORUS:
D D7
Maple Street memories and cherry tree games,
G D
summer nights and ice cream cones.
D D7
Take the red from the roses, the sun from the sky,
A7 G
but leave my Maple Street memories alone.
D A7 D
Leave my Maple Street memories alone.

#4.
D D7
I never go back that I don't stand in the yard
G D
and look at your window upstairs.
D
In my mind I see you combing your hair
E7 A7
blowing kisses at me in the air.

#5.
D D7
Then one time at Christmas I saw you come home,
G D
your arms full of children that day.
G D
It was later that night when I put mine to bed,
A7 D
I put my Maple Street memories away.

OUTRO:
D D7
Maple Street memories and cherry tree games.
G D
Summer nights and bicycle games.
D
Leave me with something my heart can take,
A7 G
but take those Maple Street memories away
D A7 D
Take those Maple Street memories away.

An eighties smash from Kraziekhat.
