John Mellencamp (born 7 October 1951 in Seymour, Indiana) is an American singer and a songwriter, known for a long and successful recording and performing career highlighted by a series of 1980s hits, including "Jack & Diane", and by his role in the Farm Aid charity event. Mellencamp currently lives in Bloomington, Indiana.
John's first record released was under the stage name "Johnny Cougar" at the behest of Tony DeFries, his first manager. Mellencamp claims it was against his knowledge and will, and he hated the name.

CGDCGDG Drivin' down a dry summer's day, old route 66 and I was just a kid CGDG Met a pretty little Indian girl along the way CGD Got her into my car and tried to give her a kiss CGDG "I'll give you beads and wampum" CGDG "Whatever it takes, girl to make you trade" CDCD She jumped into the back seat and she kinda flipped her lid CD She said, "You're trying to get somethin' for nothing CGD Like the pilgrims in the olden days."

CGDG We rode for a while, till the sun went away CGDG I realized it was a sort of an honor being around this girl CGD I felt embarrassed of what I tried to do earlier that day CGD She was the saddest girl I ever knew
CDG She told me stories about the Indian nations CGD And how the white man stole their lives away CGD And although she kinda liked me, she could never trust me CGD And when the sun comes up, we go our different ways
GD Now everybody has got the choice CD Between hotdogs and hamburgers GD Every one of us has got to choose Em Between right and wrong CD And givin' up or holdin' on
CGDG So I dropped her off at some railroad crossing in Texas CGDG An old Indian man was waiting there CGDG He smiled and thanked me but he saw right through me CGDG I could tell he didn't like me, for my kind, he did not care CGD Because to him, I was the white man CGD The one who sold him something that he already owned CGD And it was like he'd been ridin' in the car right there with us CGD And I felt ashamed of my actions and the way the west was really won GC So I drove down the highway, till I came to Los Angeles GD To the town of the angels, the best this country can do GC I got down on my knees and I ask for forgiveness D I said, "lord, forgive us, for we know not what we do."
GD Now everybody has got the choice CD Between hotdogs and hamburgers GD Every one of us has got to choose Em Between right and wrong CD And givin' up or holdin' on
