This is a song that seems to exist only as a demo (Bonus track in the album My Aim is True.
Elvis Costello plays alone on an electric guitar and I thought it was pretty cool so I tried to transcribe it.
He often plays an alternate bass pattern while strumming (1 - 5).
For example you can alternate G and D (open string) as a bass note on G, and alternate between C and
(low)G on C.
On "things are going fine", he plays a bass line on the E string like that : -0-0-1-2-3-
[Verse]
G C G
Everybody seemed to have somebody better to talk to
G C
Everybody seemed to have something better to do
D G
And I was trying to look so mean and dangerous and ended up stepping on her toe
C D
And one minute she was a perfect stranger and the next thing she said was
I thought you ought to know
[Chorus]
C
I don't wanna go home
Don't get any ideas
G
Things are going fine, then they all disappeared
D
You don't have to make me any promises
Am D
I can leave anytime I know
C
Even though I don't wanna go home
Don't get any ideas
G
Things are going fine, then they all disappeared
D
You don't have to make me any promises
Am D G
I can leave anytime I know
[Verse]
G C G
As I was drinking she was making her selection over in the corner
G C
Still thinking about the dancing perfection out on the floor
D G D G
I'd like to shake the hand of the man who started "slow dancing" time
C D Am D
And curse the crazy fool who dreamed up "closing time"
[Chorus]
C
Even though, I don't wanna go home
Don't get any ideas
G
Things are going fine, then they all disappeared
D
You don't have to make me any promises
Am D
I can leave anytime I know
C
Even though, I don't wanna go home
Don't get any ideas
G
Things are going fine, then they all disappeared
D
You don't have to make me any promises
Am D
I can leave anytime I know
C G
Even though, I don't wanna go home
