The son of William Prine and Verna Hamm, his grandfather had played guitar with Merle Travis and he started playing guitar himself at 14 years old. He was a postman for 5 years and spent a couple of years in the army before starting his musical career in the Chicago area.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hello in There - John Prine ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
GAmD7 We had an apartment in the city, GAmD7 Me and Loretta liked living there. BmC Well its been years since the kids had grown, GD A life of their own left us alone.
GAmD7 John and Linda live in Omaha, GAmD7 And Joe is somewhere on the road. BmC We lost Davy in the Korean war, GD And I still don't know what for don't matter anymore.
[Chorus]
FG Ya know that old trees just grow stronger, FG And old rivers grow wilder every day. BmC Old people just grow lonesome GDG Waiting for someone to say Hello in there, hello.
[Verse]
GAmD7 Me and Loretta we don't talk much more, GAmD7 She sits and stares through the back door screen. BmC And all the news just repeats itself GD Like some forgotten dream that we've both seen.
GAmD7 Someday I'll go and call up Rudy, GAmD7 We worked together at the factory. BmC But what could I say if asks What's new GD Nothing, what's with you? Nothing much to do.
[Chorus]
FG Ya know that old trees just grow stronger, FG And old rivers grow wilder every day. BmC Old people just grow lonesome GDG Waiting for someone to say Hello in there, hello.
[Verse]
GAmD7 So if you're walking down the street sometime GAmD7 And spot some hollow ancient eyes, BmC Please don't just pass them by and stare GDG As if you didn't care, say Hello in there, hello
