Jars of Clay is a popular Christian alternative rock group formed while the band members attended Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois, United States in 1992. The group's sound has varied over the years as the band has experimented with pop, folk, rock, trip-hop, gospel, and hymnsong. Their self-titled album featured layered acoustic guitars over programmed trip-hop beats. The song "Flood" was the band's biggest crossover hit, and it hit #37 on the Billboard Hot 100 as well as #12 on the Modern Rock chart.

INTRO: AmCG (x5)
VERSE 1: AmCG The marionette has your number AmCG It pullin your arms and legs till you can't stand on your own AmCG Dragging your conscience on the stage and you heart gets rearranged AmCG And you cannot tell your mentor from your maker AmCG Look at the crowds bleeding with laughter AmCG Over the way you entertain at beckon call AmCG They don't see behind the lights or the painted background AmCG They just like to see you fall
CHORUS: CAmCG But you don't really mind CAmCG Cause you're just wasting time CAmCG You can't feel anything CAmCG Just a boy on a string
VERSE 2: AmCG I feel a sadness like Gapetto AmCG Watching the life that he created run away, AmCG Seeing the puppeteer's intrusion and holding the remains AmCG Of puppets that had rotted away AmCG One day the curtain will not open AmCG And all of the crowds will go away AmCG Someday those strings will choke you AmCG But until that day
