[G tacet]
I thought I'd go [G] up Poughkeepsie look out [C] o'er the Hudson and I'd [G] throw my body down on the [D] river. And I'd [G] know no more sorrow I'd fly [C] like the sparrow and I'd ride [G] on the backs of the [D] angels [G] tonight.
Chorus I'd ride [D] on the backs of the [C] angels to[G]night I'd take [D] to the sky with all [C] of my [G] might [G] No more drowning in my sorrows, no more drowning in my [C] fright I'd just ride [G] on the backs of the [D] angels to[G]night
[C]
There are [G] those who know sorrow and [C] those who must borrow and those [G] whose lot in life is [D] sweet. Well I'm [G] drunk on self-pity, scorned [C] all that's been given me, I would [G] drink from a bottle labeled [D] Sure De[G]feat.
repeat chorus
[C]
Then the [G] skies they fell open and [C] my eyes were opened to a [G] world of hope falling at my [D] feet. Now I've [G] no more or less than [C] anyone else has, what I [G] have is a gift of life I [D] can't re[G]peat. So I [G] go up Poughkeepsie look out [C] o'er the Hudson and I [G] cast my worries to the [D] sky. Now I [G] still know sorrow but I can fly [C] like the sparrow cause I ride [G] on the backs of the [D] angels [G] tonight.
repeat chorus except last line is I'll just ride [G] on the backs of the [D] angels each [C] night end on [G tacet]
